In the French-speaking Swizerland region (Romandy), natural areas are under heavy pressure due to various economic, agricultural, and recreational activities. These interactions with wildlife sometimes make coexistence difficult. With its diverse landscapes, ranging from alpine areas to valleys, and its unique climatic conditions, this region is home to a wide variety of species that often face the expansion of human infrastructure. It is therefore crucial to find a balance between biodiversity conservation and the continuation of human activities to ensure harmonious coexistence.
This rich wildlife on a territory with numerous human activities results in diverse interactions. In 2024, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, in collaboration with the KORA Foundation, PRONatura, and the Swiss Ornithological Station, who act as the steering committee and technical partners of the Human-Wildlife Initiative in Romandy, have decided to mobilize in response to these challenges.
This Initiative focuses on several species of wildlife present in rural or mountainous areas: wild boars, deer, roe deer, wolves, chamois, ibex, foxes, badgers, stoats, bats, voles, lynxes, and birds of prey. Its goal is to develop innovative and concrete proposals to improve relations between wildlife and human activities: agriculture, tourism, hunting, outdoor sports, and forest management.
Examples include:
- Adapting agricultural practices to coexist with wildlife;
- Actions to make outdoor sports compatible with wildlife;
- Development of communication tools to promote agritourism that highlights wildlife;
- Study and monitoring of wildlife populations;
- Educational and public activities, meetings with rural stakeholders.
The first call for projects in Romandy is open until October 31st, 2024.
Selected projects, which may begin at the end of the fourth quarter of 2024, must focus on:
- Field actions aimed at preventing or mitigating conflicts between wildlife and human activities;
